There's an ongoing debate over whether these rusting and collapsing piers
by Riverside Park South should be demolished. Some artists and architects
think they're beautiful in their decay while others think they're just eye-sores and
an accident waiting to happen (when fools like me decide to
poke around in them).
One thing is certain: it's striking how much these piers resemble
Frank Gehry's architectural models and sketches. So perhaps instead of asking whether the
piers are just piles of junk metal or "accidental" artwork, it would be more apropos and
instructive to ask whether Gehry buildings are art or junk.
