Figure/Ground > China > Signs & Oddities
An ice-cream teppanyaki at Häagen-Dazs. Fresh fruits and ice-cream served on
a hot plate, arranged like Japanese teppanyaki. Häagen-Dazs is very fancy
in China—with expensive-looking
interiors and immaculately-dressed wait-staff. It's interesting that this is
the marketing direction Häagen-Dazs has chosen to approach selling
ice-cream in China. This tepanyaki cost 128RMB. For perspective, the maid who comes
to clean my parents' apartment 6 mornings a week gets paid 400RMB per month. Or that
a dinner for 4 with drinks at a nice restaurants in one of those smaller cities
we visited cost less than 100RMB.
